What is OpenAI?
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research company best known for its GPT series of large language models and for ChatGPT, the chatbot it launched in November 2022.
It began in December 2015 as a nonprofit with the stated mission of making artificial general intelligence benefit humanity. To fund the enormous computing that large models demand, it later adopted a capped-profit structure that limits investor returns while a nonprofit retains oversight.
How OpenAI Works
OpenAI trains general-purpose models on massive datasets and releases them as products rather than publishing their weights. The GPT models generate and analyze text; DALL·E generates images from written prompts.
Access comes through two channels. ChatGPT puts the models in front of consumers as a conversational AI, while the OpenAI API lets developers build the same models into their own software, from writing assistants to customer-service tools.
For a governance audience, the structure matters as much as the products. OpenAI is a recurring test case for how commercial pressure and safety commitments coexist inside one organization.
Example of OpenAI
The clearest example is the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. OpenAI took an existing GPT language model, tuned it to follow instructions in dialogue, and released it as a free website where anyone could type a question and get a fluent answer. Adoption spread faster than for any prior AI product, and the release reset the policy agenda. Lawmakers finalizing the EU AI Act added obligations for general-purpose AI models in the negotiations that followed, and generative AI moved from research topic to boardroom risk item within months.
