What is an AI Use Case?
An AI use case is a specific, bounded application of AI to a concrete problem: fraud detection in payments, CV screening in hiring, defect detection on a production line. The term matters because governance happens at this level. The same underlying model is harmless in one use case and heavily regulated in another, and laws like the EU AI Act assign risk by intended purpose, not by technology.
Types of AI Use Cases
- Automation use cases: AI takes over a repetitive task end to end, such as invoice processing or routing customer queries.
- Prediction use cases: AI scores or forecasts to support decisions: credit scoring, demand forecasting, predictive maintenance.
- Generation use cases: AI drafts content such as text, images, or code, with a person reviewing the output.
Organizations that take governance seriously keep an inventory of their use cases, each with an owner, a purpose, and a risk rating. The inventory, not the list of models, is where AI governance starts.
Example of an AI Use Case
A bank wants to use one language model in two places: drafting internal marketing copy and screening job applications.
The first use case carries minimal risk and no special obligations. The second lands in the EU AI Act’s high-risk tier, because recruitment decisions affect people’s livelihoods; the bank must add risk management, documentation, and human oversight before the tool goes live.
Same model, same vendor, different use case – and a completely different set of duties. That is why regulators, auditors, and governance teams all speak in use cases rather than technologies.
